Hello ladies and gents! I come to you beseeching advice in regard to the blog title.

I have wanted an electronic keyboard for a very long time, but never actually had an opportunity to get one until now. My parents have been asking me what kind of keyboard I would like, which leads me to believe they would like to buy me one as a Christmas present. The problem is, I do not know what kind of keyboard or synth I would want because I don't know anything about them! So here's where I come to you guys for help, hoping that some of you are more knowledgeable about this topic.

Any advice? I don't know where to start researching! I think I would prefer a synth. And also, if this helps at all, my friend and I are thinking about starting a band. What says you? I have looked at one called the Alesis Micron and it looks neat! Any thoughts?

Cool, right?!

If you can swing it, I think I'd go with a simpler midi-type keyboard and a cool synthesizer computer program.

at least that's what my brother does, I think.

or maybe you just want a cool synth keyboard.

in any case I'm talking out of my ass and have no clue. but look into it.

Aye aye, cap'n Steve! I trust your opinion. Or your brother's opinion. This will be looked over.

my bro has a nord, something like this:

it's pretty schnazzy. i don't know too much about the more synth end of keyboards...but this is a nice one that you can use with computer software as well ,sounds great.

THIS ONE TIME I WATCHED A DOCUMENTARY ON MOOG THEREMINS ALONE IN MY ROOM. I am now saving up for a Moog theremin. I totally want to be buried with a ring modulator because they are SO AWESOME.

I've been wanting a cool electronic keyboard or a synth or an organ. But I don't know much about them and I'm too poor for any.
My friend is a DJ and he's into all this kind of stuff. I told him I was looking into an old midi keyboard, but he said unless I plan on modding it, I'd be best to look for programs or more complex keyboards that have that sound in their library.
I don't know anything about organs except that Hammond is good. :/

This is mine, then again if you don't know anything about synths I don't know if I reccomend you going this deep into the synth world right away.....
I'm with whoever said to get a MIDI keyboard and just turn it into whatever you want it to be through software... I started out that way, while I got comfortable enough.... it also allowed for being to record multiple track instruments!

His name is David, my name is Anna. So... Dan? Our band's name will be Dan.

I wish olli and spacesick would make their way into my blog. ;( I also have a hunch that maybe Julia knows a little bit about this kind o' stuff. I should holler at her.

Whoa that's nice Dez!
I have know idea what any of those knobs do, but it looks awesome.

And MOOG!
I love going to the music store and playing all the keyboards. Its the only section of the music store that I don't feel like a loser, even though its the only section of the music store where I have the least amount of experience in.

Anna,

my suggestion honestly would be to go into one of the Moog retail stores if there's one near you... or even a related music shop.. and just play around with them and their features until you feel something that just feels comfortable for you.... the internet luckily is readily available with all sorts of videos on how to use it and learn cool tricks on it... but specially given your piano background.... this is really something where you don't look for the synth... the synth finds you... touch as many as you can, get your hands dirty... and narrow it down!
tracerbullet
   tracerbullet on Nov 15 '09 at 10:53pm
i think you should go for a mid- or full-size keyboard rather than a synth with only a few octaves
canceromega
canceromega on Nov 15 '09 at 11:12pm
Thanks Dez and Brian! And yes, I fully plan on going and playing around with some instruments before I make any final decisions. That's the best part!

I have a microkorg. they are pretty sweet easy to use synths. plus they have a vocoder!
sonmi
   sonmi on Nov 15 '09 at 11:45pm
I believe the microkorg does have midi output too in case you want to use a softsynth later on. I actually use a mellotron plug-in for sounds now a lot more than the korg, but use the korg when I want some sick bassssssszz

Anna would totally be my best lady.
People'd be like, "You gotta have a best man dawg. That gay." And I'd be all like, "Yo, fuck you, poopturd, I can do whatever I want! It my wedding."
And then Anna and I would smash fists and start breakdancing all over the altar.
